background

The 12-member Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of Minnesota. A joint convention of the Minnesota legislature elects one Regent from each of Minnesota's eight congressional districts and four from the state at large. One of the four at-large Regents must be a University student at the time of election. Regents serve without pay for six-year terms. Terms are staggered, with one-third of the seats up for election every two years. Regents typically serve a maximum of two terms.

Regent Candidate Advisory Council Process

The Regent Candidate Advisory Council (RCAC) is established in law to identify, recruit and recommend qualified candidates. The RCAC will interview several candidates and recommend a minimum of two candidates and maximum of four candidates for each position. The candidates are forwarded to a joint legislative committee of senators and representative by January 15, 2017. The joint legislative committee reviews all nominations but may also nominate and consider a candidate that has not been recommended by the RCAC.

A joint legislative committee may recommend no more than one candidate for each board vacancy to the joint convention of the Minnesota Senate and the Minnesota House. Regents are elected at a joint convention of the House and Senate.
