B3 Training: Effective Acoustics in Occupied Commercial Spaces

Monday, May 20, 2019 3:00PM - 4:30PM

The Center for Sustainable Building Research is offering a new training session and workshop, Effective Acoustics in Occupied Commercial Spaces.

The new requirements for ‘I.6 Effective Acoustics’ in the new Version 3.1 of the B3 Guidelines represents a higher bar for understanding and documenting the acoustical characteristics of a building('s) occupied spaces. This training and workshop will provide insight into acoustic factors that positively impact the experience of users in the space.  It will discuss acoustical characteristics including sound level and reverberation time, data interpretation, and methods of affecting positive changes in those characteristics. Workshop participants will work with some of the key tools required to investigate and document acoustical performance: characterization of noise, octave band plotting, evaluation of Noise Criteria (NC), and estimation of reverberation time. The class will also practice converting between NC ratings and dB ratings, as well as performing AHRI sound analysis for HVAC equipment.

Date: May 20, 2019, 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Location: Bruininks Hall, room 420A, 222 Pleasant Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455
Instructor: Chris Baker, The Weidt Group
Cost: $25/person

1.5 AIA LU HSW, AIA Course #CSBR-B3.1EA

Prerequisite knowldege: none

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, each participant will:
·       Understand basic acoustical characteristics.
·       Understand the difference between raw decibel (dB) and Noise Criteria (NC) ratings.
·       Be able to perform a simple HVAC NC estimate.
