Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

From Minnesota Alumni Magazine Winter 2015

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a potential risk factor for problem eating in women, according to a study from the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health.

Assistant professor and lead author Susan Mason found that women who reported a history of severe PTSD symptoms were more than twice as likely as those without symptoms to meet the criteria for food addiction on the Yale Food Addiction Scale, which assesses perceived dependence on food in much the same way other instruments screen for alcohol or drug dependency. Mason’s research was published in the September 17 issue of JAMA Psychiatry.
