The Urban Growler Story
As told by U of M alumnae Deb Loch and Jill Pavlak
Someday is now. The story of the First Woman-Owned Microbrewery in Minnesota.
Urban Growler® Brewing Company opened in July 2014 by Master Brewer Deb Loch and co-head honcho Jill Pavlak. These two combined their complementary skills and passions to create great beer, food and space for everyone.
We’ve all had those thoughts, “There’s got to be something better…” “Someday I want to…” Well, in 2008 Deb and Jill decided, “Someday is NOW” and the idea of Urban Growler® brewing was conceived.
Six years later, thousands of miles traveled visiting taprooms, jobs in the industry, brew school, a year raising funds via t-shirt sales, founding memberships, tours of an empty brick shell and beer tastings...finally, enough money was raised (12 banks denied them funding) and Urban Growler® Brewing Company became a reality.
When Urban Growler® Brewing Company opened in July 2014, it was the first women-owned brewery in the state of Minnesota. It was an emotional day surrounded with family, friends, and 100’s of complete strangers that had been pulling for these two.
Visit the taproom or try Urban Growler® beer at a local bar or restaurant or buy cans at your neighborhood liquor store! Remember… We’re beer for you.™
How Has the University of Minnesota Impacted You
Deb graduated with a Masters in Biomedical Engineering. As a graduate student she embarked on a research study in Orthopedic research that provided the foundation for her professional career as an engineer and project manager in the Medical Device Industry. What’s funny is that education she received at the U of M and her career in the highly regulated medical device industry was perfect training for becoming a brewer. Who Knew.
Jill also stomped around the other side of campus, focusing on communications and psychology. She uses both of those skills daily as she is the face of social media, customer service and the queen of culture at Urban Growler.
